Pukara - A Waterhole
The artists featured in this exhibition are from Kalka in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) lands which are in the far north west of South Australia. The artists paint stories of their country and in particular Pukara an important waterhole. This waterhole is the home of two male watersnakes. It is surrounded by many varieties of Honey Grevillea which is known in some parts as a lolly tree because of the sweet nectar.
The most senior artist from this community and in this exhibition is Jimmy Donegan who was the winner in 2010 of the most prestigious indigenous Art Award with a painting titled ‘Papa Tjukurpa Pukara’ as this is his grandfathers’ country.
