Biography
Billy Missi was born in 1970 and grew up in the Torres Straits island of Moa living a traditional island life.
His main totems were Crocodile, Dugong and Shovel Nose Ray.
Billy’s art career began in 1999 when he learned printmaking by lino-cut.Over the following years he perfected his art connected to his knowledge of Torres Straits customs and traditions. He was intensely interested in his history and the authenticity of his style and pattern making.
In 2009 he embarked on a project, to be the first Torres Straits artist to create a body of stone lithographic limited prints. In collaboration with Pandanus Gallery and master print-maker Theo Tremblay he produced 12 black and white works exhibited at Pandanus Gallery to coincide with the first Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. The following year he re-exhibited, again with Pandanus Gallery, these works as hand colored editions.
