Karen Napaljarri Barnes is the latest sensation in Aboriginal Art to emerge from Warlukurlangku Artists of Yuendumu. Karen now in her twenties has been painting since the age of eleven, guided by her grandmother Judy Napangardi Watson.
The daughter of Susie Watson she established a close bond with her grandmother who encourages her painting while teaching her all the important cultural stories and traditions. Initially she ‘Painted like the old ladies’ according to art centre manager Cecelia Alfonso.
After a workshop initiative in the community by management, artists were encouraged to ‘Paint the birds you see around Yuendumu’ This had mixed success but Karen stunned with her spontaneous ‘Budgie’ paintings. And she hasn’t stopped.
We all look forward to where it goes from here.
