Painted in 1988 at Papunya Tula – one of a series using similar design and colour systems – this is a magnificent work that evokes ancient, traditional ‘ground painting’ using the natural earthy colours of the desert – ochre, charcoal and clay – and sacred designs relating to the the particular ceremony referred to. Typically, these designs would have been restricted to initiated men who were entitled to create them and participate in the ceremony itself.
